Harbinger of the Witches' Sabbath? The Emergence of Devil Worship Imagery in the Trial of the Templars
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper discusses specific cases of emergence of demonological elements in the Trial of the knights Templar, taking place between the years 1307 and 1312. It focuses on the elements of demonic sexuality, and the Devil’s appearance in an animal form, both of which are seen as forerunners of the later Witches’ Sabbath imagery. The paper argues that although these elements were not introduced to the medieval heresiological though and inquisitorial practice as a complete novelty with the Trial of the Templars, they were considerably elaborated and enriched during this affair. Importantly, the paper argues that these motifs did not constitute a firm and integral part of the early 14th century inquisitorial thought about heresy. The present analysis shows that they appeared in a very limited number of recorded depositions of the Templars, produced under unusual circumstances. The paper argues that in these extraordinary cases, unexperienced investigators deviated from the standard reservoir of heresiological knowledge, combining it with information about the possibilities of demonic activity obtained from different kinds of sources. This should be considered an important pattern when studying the transformation of late Medieval thought about heresy into the theory of diabolical Witchcraft.
