In 1978, Václav Havel wrote an essay on the power of the powerless. Havel's analysis of power, ideology, freedom, responsibility, technological civilization, and the concept of "dissident" remains inspiring to this day, both for understanding the nature of the USSR-dominated Eastern Bloc and for understanding political oppression in general. In this special issue of the Philosophical Journal, we reflect on the key themes of The Power of the Powerless in the context of contemporary culture and current ethical and political debates.
