The author brings a new perspective on the power causes of the so-called Second Prague Defenestration of 23 May 1618, which is symbolically considered to be the beginning of the Thirty Years&apos; War. Older interpretations emphasize the confessional causes of the conflict between the Bohemian Estates opposition and the Habsburg-Catholic power group. However, the economic context has not yet been taken into account. New research into the source base (especially the accounting records of the court chambers in Vienna and Prague) shows that after the declaration of bankruptcy of the sovereign&apos;s credit in Bohemia in 1615, a very sharp struggle for economic resources took place in the country, both at the level of the tax system (from 1615 the estates took over the collection of taxes into their own administration) and at the level of the landed property of the sovereign. As a result of the cessation of the regular inflow of money from Bohemia after 1615, the Vienna court chamber found itself insolvent. Vilém Slavata of Chlum played an essential role in these matters as president of the Bohemian court chamber.
