Niniejsze studium analizuje środki językowe wykorzystywane przez Zdeněka Vojtěcha Popela z Lobkowicz i jego żonę Polyxenę z Pernštejna w celu wyrażenia wzajemnej miłości w korespondencji małżeńskiej. Materiał, składający się z ponad 170 listów napisanych w języku hiszpańskim, obejmuje szeroką gamę miłosnych zwrotów adresowych i innych środków językowych, za pomocą których para zapewniała się nawzajem o swojej dozgonnej wzajemnej miłości i uczuciu. Nie bez znaczenia jest fakt, że forma tych środków językowych przypominała język używany we współczesnych powieściach bukolicznych i opowieściach rycerskich z okresu Siglo de Oro, które stały się popularne wśród szerokich warstw społecznych w XVI i XVII wieku i były również bogato reprezentowane w bibliotekach czeskiej arystokracji - w tym w bibliotece należącej do Zdeněka Vojtěcha Popela z Lobkowicz.

This study analyzes the linguistic resources used by Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel of Lobkowicz and his wife Polyxena of Pernštejn in order to express their love for each other in their marital correspondence. The material, comprising over 170 letters written in Spanish, encompasses a wide range of amorous terms of address and other linguistic resources through which the couple assured each other of their undying mutual love and affection. It is not without interest that the form of these linguistic resources resembled the language used in contemporary bucolic novels and knightly tales from the Siglo de Oro, which became popular among broad strata of society during the 16th and 17th centuries and were also amply represented in the libraries of the Bohemian aristocracy – including the library belonging to Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel of Lobkowicz. The entries in his personal diary provide conclusive evidence that he did indeed read this literature. The declarations of love found in the analyzed correspondence therefore do not necessarily reflect the actual depth of the couple’s emotions; rather they may indicate both spouses’ intellectual abilities and their willingness to use refined language as a means of courtship. The social and cultural anchoring of the linguistic resources used in the correspondence is also evident in the fact that Polyxena and her husband generally did not move beyond the boundaries of the socio-sexual hierarchy, and that their mutual expressions of love remained firmly within the confines of their respective gender roles. The genuine affection that the spouses felt for each other can mainly be discerned behind this linguistic veneer in cases when they were both facing situations of crisis; paradoxically, the depth of their emotional connection is revealed particularly when they express emotions such as fear, anxiety or distress, which – combined with their physical separation from each other – acted as important stimulants of desire.
