The chapter discusses the genre of "consolatio" in the history of literature and re-defines it for the current study. It clarifies the concept of anthropocene in literary studies context, outlines the history of literary depictions of the human relationships to nature and characterizes ecocriticism and its various categories. Finally, it places the following chapters within this theoretical and methodological framework.
