Název v původním jazyce
The Imperial Envoy Franz Sigmund Count von Thun and the Strategy of Dissimulation Used by the English King Charles II in the early 1680s
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The study focuses on the relationship between the English king Charles II of England and the imperial envoy Franz Sigmund Count von Thun in the years 1680–1685. Drawing on approximately 230 surviving reports, it analyses the king’s strategy of dissimulation as a key instrument of courtly communication. Thun was tasked with negotiating a defensive alliance between Emperor Leopold I and England against French expansion, yet he encountered the king’s covert collaboration with France. Although he met the monarch regularly and participated in court life, his mission proved unsuccessful. The study demonstrates how dissimulation enabled Charles II to maintain an appearance of neutrality and prestige while in fact favouring French interests, and how this strategy shaped the outcomes of Habsburg diplomacy.
