Confinement of reinforced concrete column using composites fabric – method of strengthening structures

The columns as structural elements are widely used in building and bridge construction; during their lifetime they must transfer various kinds in time-varying load (change of use of the building, reconstruction, earthquake, and others). Existing designed elements become insufficient to carry this actual load (i.e. due to environmental degradation, damage control, etc.) and for this reason it is necessary to strengthen them. The paper deals with the reinforced concrete column, mainly as a vertical compression elements, strengthened by fabric wrapping FRP (FRP - fiber reinforced polymer). It describes the principle of strengthening of element by composite materials and highlights the differences between the behavior of unconfined and confined elements. It also deals with the actual design of strengthening, and compares different approaches to establish the resulting properties of wrapped column. The analytical studies are compared with the results of performed numerical simulations and experimental work. Experimental work was carried out to test the specimens of reinforced concrete column with axial centric load. The comparison is done using interaction diagram (centric pressure corresponds to the point "O" in the vaunted curve resistance element).
