Reinforced concrete structures shall be designed, constructed, and maintained in such a manner that their performance could be addressed in an economically reasonable way during the process of design, construction, service life, and dismantlement with respect to serviceability, structural safety, sustainability. Over a decade old fib Model Code 2010 emphasized design with respect to durability and advocated probabilistic approaches. The forthcoming fib Model Code 2020 should, in addition to it, provide guidelines for the consistent treatment of sustainability. In this paper, the focus is paid to the sustainable design process of reinforced concrete structure, introducing indicators which consider material or structure performance, durability, eco-costs, and production costs. These indicators may help to incorporate the sustainability issue into the design process related to the material aspect, and especially to the structure level.
