Concepts of Machine Tools Created by Students at Department of Industrial Design, Brno University of Technology

The article is based on a description of historical trends in design of machine tools and presents contemporary possibilities for their design solutions. Czech lands were in terms of the engineering industry at a high level. There arose a large number of machine tools, which have been internationally awarded. Since the emphasis on overall aesthetic expression, the machines were designed by engineers and industrial designers. Changes of the shape and the materials used have been over the years due to the new possibilities of production and contemporary trends. The studio lessons of the Department of Industrial Design at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Brno created designs of machine tools that meet current trends in the morphology and the use of modern materials. Term tasks were dealt with the tradition of Czechoslovak production in the field of industrial design. Students chose the type of machine tool, elaborated technical analysis, analysis of the current products and produced alternative proposals based on the information subsequently developed and the final version of the 3D model, which they presented using realistic visualization. Selected proposals machine tools are described in terms of shape, ergonomics, aesthetics and technology in the article. Part of these proposals lists recommended materials for each part of covers that facilitate maintenance, durability and operating the machine. The materials are selected from the library matériO', which contains over 7,000 online material cards, that are available at the Department of Industrial Design. This article includes presentation of new design solutions, including a description of modern materials that can be used in manufacturing the machines.
