The operating parameters of rotary machines can be affected by an application of a casing treatment. A review of the state of art of aerodynamic phenomena occurring in centrifugal compressors is presented, and a review of geometry modifications using casing treatment that leads to their suppression is also given. Based on the knowledge gained mainly from the research on axial compressors, a selected casing treatment is applied to the casing of a centrifugal compressor. The results based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses show the considerable potential of modifying the stator impeller geometry. It is demonstrated that an increase in aerodynamic efficiency as well as a reduction in aerodynamic noise can be achieved by the application of the casing treatment.
