The necessity of expenditure on R&D in the business sector is a topical trend in the current economic situation. The level of investment is assessed as a percentage of GDP (R&D expenditure (% of GDP)). In its Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU obliged its member states to achieve a level of at least 3 %, divided as follows: 2 % of expenditure on R&D is to originate from the business sector, 1 % from the state sector. This paper focuses on a comparison of the development of expenditure on R&D in the business sector in the V4 countries with the EU27 average. The author has monitored the expenditure of SMEs, the number of SMEs and the level of expenditure in the business sector per capita. The author of the paper has employed an analysis and synthesis method, statistical methods ? analysis of time periods. Conversion to per capita figures has been used for the purpose of comparison of individual values. The input data was secondary data obtained and verified from statistical authorities and gov
