Metallographic Analysis of Stainless Steel Inner Shaft of Centrifugal Pump
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper focuses on the metallographic analysis of the damaged inner shaft of a centrifugal pump with magnetic clutch. Pumps driven via a magnetic clutch are widely used in industry for the pumping of dangerous and highly explosive liquids. In pumps with a magnetic clutch the possibility of the liquid entering into the electric drive is excluded. The magnetic clutch transfers rotation from the drive through an air gap from the driving half-clutch to the driven half [1, 2]. In this case, the damaged part of centrifugal pump (Fig. 1) was made of stainless steel and transmitted power from the magnetic clutch to the impeller of the pump. The pump was overhauled by the Manufacturer after ten years of routine work. Slightly worn parts of the pump including inner stainless steel shaft were replaced by the Manufacturer according to the preserved documentation. The overhauled pump failed after two days of running in the original conditions. This failure was solved by an analysis of three used inner shafts, namely the slightly worn original and two damaged replacements. This work was carried out via microstructure analysis, fracture analysis, hardness measurements, and chemical composition analysis.
