Nine decades of major compositional changes in a CentralEuropean beech forest protected area
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Lowland forests in Europe went throughdramatic changes in the last century. Data accumu-lated from the nature reserve Buky u Vysoke ́hoChvojna in the Czech Republic provide a uniqueopportunity to follow beech forest development usinga time series consisting of five points in time from1926 to 2019. Our goal was to reconstruct changes inplant species richness and plant community composi-tion over this period. Based on the available data, weconcluded that vascular plant species richness per plotdeclined by at least 50%, possibly by 75% since 1951.Compositional dissimilarities between the first survey and subsequent resurveys revealed a directionaltrajectory of vegetation changes. Treating time as anenvironmental factor and tree canopy cover as acovariable (and vice versa) in canonical correspon-dence analysis permutation tests where only theherbaceous layer was used, time turned out to bemuch more important. Variance partitioning revealedthat time explained 28.1% and tree canopy 4.2% of thevariation in the species data. The two variablestogether explained 36.8% of the variance, revealingthat the shared effect of these two variables was 4.5%.Ellenberg-type indicator values point to a possible roleof increasing nitrogen and decreasing pH. Severalother factors potentially responsible for observedvegetation changes are discussed.
