The article analyzes the phenomenon of poverty and inequality in a systemic manner. In the fi rst part, the defi nitions of poverty, global development with a special focus on the Czech Republic are introduced. In the second part, the issues of inequality and poverty are set in the context of labour market changes connected with globalization. They are refl ected by a long-term decline in labour income share that we have observed in developed countries. The decline in wage share is mirrored in the increase in capital income share. Capital income share belongs to major determinants of income distribution. Increasing research interest in these topics is also given by the search for suitable economic tools for lowering poverty and inequality.
