The Northern white rhinoceros (NWR, Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is the most endangered mammal' in existence. Only two females survive - they belong to a European zoo, but reside in Kenya and both are now infertile. The only way to create a self-sustaining population of the NWR is to use Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) combined with emerging stem cell technologies. Our consortium achieved the first development of a white rhino embryo to the blastocyst stage in vitro. Samples collected from European zoos resulted in both pure-bred Souther white rhinoceros (SWR) and hybrid femaleSWR * maleNWR blastocysts (pre-implantation embryos). After collection, the oocytes from SWR females were transported to a specialised lab in a shipping incubator that kept temperature of 22 °C for up to 48 h. In the lab, the cocytes were matured and fertilised by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with thawed semen, in some cases even with NWR semen from males that deceased vears ago. Several embryosinjection (ICSI) with thawed semen, in some cases even with NWR semen from males that deceased years ago. Several embryos are now cryopreserved for future transfer into surrogate mothers. The development of a white rhino embryo opens up the potential to bring back NWR from the brink of extinction. This would be achieved by adopting the procedure to oocytes to be collected from the last two living NWR females. Female SWR could act as surrogate mothers.
