Letters in chronicling migration and integration: Usadil by se kdekoli mezi krajany našímy..."I'd settle anywhere among our natives..."
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This work examines the role of personal correspondence in initiating and sustaining migration, as well as fostering integration, based on letters written by a 19th-century Czech immigrant to Texas. The correspondence of migrants like the Přibyls highlights that migration is a historical phenomenon driven by individuals challenging their circumstances, transgressing boundaries, and seeking to improve their lives. While seemingly an economic issue, migration is also a profound emotional trauma. The study of the Přibyl correspondence is not merely a historical endeavour but also a reflection of enduring dilemmas faced by migrants attempting to start anew in different cultural and socioeconomic environments, issues that remain pertinent today.
