Antologie Čtení o Bedřichu Václavkovi opatřená podtitulem Tvorba, metoda, dějiny zpřítomňuje momenty kritického přijímání i zpětného hodnocení díla literárního vědce Bedřicha Václavka (1897–1943) v časovém rozmezí od dvacátých let do první poloviny let sedmdesátých. Na základě chronologického a kontextualizačního hlediska je čítanka rozdělena do čtyř částí. První část (s texty Z. Kalisty, L. Blatného, A. M. Píši, J. Strakoše aj.) zachycuje, jak se Václavek v průběhu dvacátých let postupně etabloval jako literární kritik soustavně sledující soudobou literární produkci a vstupující do bouřlivých generačních i světonázorových diskusí. V druhé části prostřednictvím textů E. Urxe, A. Nováka, V. Černého, F. X. Šaldy nebo B. Fučíka nahlížíme na proces dozrávání Václavkovy literárněvědné metody ve třicátých letech a na její případné limity. Poválečným vzpomínkově laděným příspěvkům je věnována třetí část, v níž A. Černík, J. L. Fischer, J. Drábek, J. Václavková a další přibližují některé souvislosti Václavkova života, včetně jeho tragického závěru v koncentračním táboře. Poslední část obsahuje recenze a studie K. Chvatíka, M. Noska, J. Brabce, O. Suse a F. X. Halase. Většina z nich byla publikována v šedesátých letech, kdy můžeme zaznamenat zvýšený zájem o dílo B. Václavka, který zapadal do širšího proudu tehdejší reflexe české meziválečné kultury. Václavkovo dílo se tak ocitlo v nových souvislostech znovu obnovovaného vědomí kulturní kontinuity.

Bedřich Václavek’s (1897–1943) writings on literary theory and criticism tend to be associated with the cultural ferment of the interwar period. He belonged among key representatives of Czech Marxist literary criticism and as the co-founder of the artist group Devětsil, he was also an important, active figure of the artistic avant-garde. He endeavoured to establish literary criticism on a scientific basis. For him that meant Marxism as a consistently materialistic view of the world and a dialectical method that takes into consideration contradictory social aspects of literary development. The anthology Čtení o Bedřichu Václavkovi (Readings on Bedřich Václavek) provides a sense of the response to his efforts and how they were criticised, received and later reflected on by scholarly researchers. A chronological and overall contextual approach led to the anthology’s division into four parts. From the second half of the 1920s onwards, Václavek progressively established himself as a left ist literary critic who systematically reflected on contemporary literary production and was involved in generational and worldview discussions. This phase of Václavek’s individual development is outlined in part one Generační spory a vědomí krize (Generational Disputes and the Awareness of a Crisis). Here, writings by Zdeněk Kalista and Lev Blatný present Václavek in his role of critic of literary expressionism. Aspects of generational conflict also come to the foreground in Živan Vodseďálek’s polemically slanted writings, as well as in A. M. Píša’s texts. Behind the generational and programmatic disputes, however, one could detect a more general struggle for a new conception of artistic production fed by the awareness that the existing one was in crisis. These more general, aesthetic and ideological motives are pointed out by, among others, literary historian Albert Pražák, philosopher and sociologist Josef Ludvík Fischer and literary historian and Catholic critic Jan Strakoš. Part two of the anthology, O metodu literárněvědného marxismu (The Method of Marxist Literary Criticism), includes texts examining the maturation of Václavek’s literary criticism theory. Critical writings by Arne Novák, Václav Černý, F. X. Šalda and Bedřich Fučík often highlight the limits of the Marxist method consisting in its schematic approach to the relationship between literary and social development. The extensive piece by Eduard Urx is characterised by a detailed analysis of Václavek’s standpoints and may also be viewed as confronting two ways of understanding Marxist theory. Sociologist Inocenc Arnošt Bláha looks at Václavek as a scholarly researcher whose interests at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s pre- dominantly consisted of literary history and folklore. The third section, Poválečné reminiscence (Postwar Reminiscences), is devoted to writings with a biographical, memorialising slant. The authors look back on Václavek’s activities in Devětsil Brno and as part of the editorial board of the Index journal (Artuš Černík, Josef Ludvík Fischer); his sociological and folkloristic research (Ludvík Svoboda, Robert Smetana); and on the tragic end of his life under the Protectorate and in the Auschwitz concentration camp (Jaroslava Václavková, Jaromír Drábek). The title of the anthology’s fourth and last section – V nových souvislostech (New Contexts) gives an indication of the nature of its constituent writings.They comprise reviews and studies most of which were written in the 1960s when a heightened interest in Bedřich Václavek’s output was in evidence. This interest fitted into a broader current of new reflections on interwar Czech culture as well as the examination of the theoretical robustness of aesthetic conceptions and literary critical approach linked, one way or another, to the avantgarde. As the reviews by Květoslav Chvátík and Jiří Brabec suggest, scholarly research interest in Václavek’s oeuvre (including making it accessible to readers with the publication of his complete works) was dynamized by tendencies to bring it up to date. For example how can Václavek’s conception of socialist realism (analysed by Oleg Sus) inspire contemporary art and its theoretical reflection? The final contribution in the anthology by František X. Halas’ reconstructs the circumstances of Václavek’s habilitation at the Masaryk University in Brno, interrupted as it was by historical events.
