Natural development of landscape tends, with itc interaction of water and veget., towards climax forms. Water is the bearer of and the environment for life and as such it constitutes the basis of a healthy landscape and life-supporting services of its ecosystems. Human change ("develop") the landscape and accomm. it to their wants and economic expectations. In this paper, the reasons fot the current unsatisfactory development in anthropogenic treatment of natural ecosystems and the related unsatisfactory valuation of non-market ecosystem services are analysed. Two expert valuation methods are described (biotope valuation method, expert method of ecosystem services valuation in the CR) and demostr. in three case studies on societal serv. of river floodplain and healthy mixed forest in comparison with a drained pasture. None of these ecosystems have been valued up to this day. Estimations show that 1 hectare of heathy ecosystem produced societal services at the levels of 1,2-1,5 euro mil
