The presentation evaluates the competitive position of Visegrad countries (EU-4) in terms of qualitative based structural indicators and knowledge assessment matrix indexes of innovation performance, human resource quality and information and communication technology infrastructure. The competitiveness development in the EU-4 country group has been set within the comprehensive framework of economic regime efficiency and governance quality. The long-term sustainable competitiveness in these countries requires a successful transition to knowledge economy (or technology catch-up) as the cost-based competitive advantage has been weakening in the process of nominal and real convergence towards the EU average. This transition brings a number of challenges for businesses, governments, and academia, where the key role will be played by innovation capacity and excellence.
