La obra (escrita en 1914) se considera ? junto con las obras de G. Lukács, M. Bajtin y R. Girard ? una de las obras claves de la teoría de la novela. El autor sale de la idea de que el tema básico de la novela es la desintegración del mito. Lo alcanza mediante una interpretación muy ocurrente de la novela de Cervantes, una intepretación con muchos sobrepasos y generalizaciones. Muchas ideas de Ortega fueron consecuentemente adaptadas por Milan Kundera.

This work (written in 1914) is considered ? besides the writings by G. Lukács, M. Bakhtin and R. Girard ?crucial for the theory of the novel. The author ensues from the idea that the the novel s basic theme is the disintegration of the myth and proceedsthrough an inventive interpretation of the novel by Cervantes, an interpretation dotted with oversteppings and generalizations. A lot of Ortega s thinking was subsequently developped by Milan Kundera.
