Evaluation of fatigue crack growth rates in AISI 4340 steel at different load asymmetries considering effects of hardness and microstructure
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Results of an experimental programme on the evaluation of fatigue crack growth (FCG) in heat treated AISI 4340 AQ steel are presented and discussed. The work was performed as a part of the research project MOSTA – "Modernization Of Small Transport Aircraft to increase operation effectiveness and economy", in collaboration with the project coordinator Aircraft Industries a.s. (AI) and its main aim was to obtain experimental data and knowledge about FCG in the material as a basis for computational estimations of residual life of components made of AISI 4340 AQ steel with cracks and crack-like defects. FCG rates were evaluated using CT specimens of 75 mm width and 10 mm thickness, in T-L orientation, at load asymmetries R = 0.05, 0.2 and 0.6, in the areas of stable FCG and final failure. No effect of different load asymmetry in the stable growth area was shown, which was likely connected with no crack closure. The large scatter of FCG rates in the final growth area was probably connected with significant scatter of local material hardness and grain flow character, connected also with different fracture reliefs.
