The paper is trying to show the complexity of SIFIs regulation and some of the inevitable pitfalls connected with the long process of searching ways to durable international cooperation on this field. In Par.3 of the paper, the necessity of a thorough analysis of systemic risk is explained; it is one of the starting points to the analysis of the specific role of big financial entities (especially banks). Par.4 explains the main theoretical approaches to big financial entities; problem of size and the concept of systemic importance are analysed. In Par.5 selected policy problems of SIFIs´ regulation are presented. The success of SIFIs regulation depends on many conditions which, at present, are not yet fulfilled. One of the most important conditions isa successful international assessment of Basel III.
