SOIL NITROGEN CYCLING AND MICROBIAL ACTIVITY ENHANCED BY MANURE FROM CARBON-ENRICHED CATTLE BEDDING

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Prolonged retention of cattle bedding in stables increases the risk of greenhouse gases and ammonia emissions, coupled with undesirable nutrient losses from litter used for manure production. The addition of amendments based on stabilized organic carbon to cattle bedding offers several health and welfare benefits to animals, including reduced moisture, improved hoof hygiene, and lower infection rates. Moreover, it enhances nutrient retention in the litter, notably by reducing nitrogen volatilization in the form of ammonia. Consequently, improved nutrient retention in bedding and excreta enables the production of manure of superior quality, with presumably enhanced fertilizing and soil-conditioning potential. These hypotheses were tested in a 30-day stable experiment with cows (groups of eight animals), housed in boxes which bedding amended with i) agricultural-waste biochar, ii) a humic-rich derivate of leonardite (commercial product Humac), and iii) a combination of both amendments. Manure from the combined biochar + Humac treatment had significantly higher total carbon content, while manure from the biochar-only treated had significantly increased total nitrogen and phosphorus contents compared to manure from the control group (from bedding without amendments). All treatments increased the pH of manure relative to the control.
