The (Mis)use of Islamic Charity: Past, Present, and Future
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of this paper is to propose two arguments. First, since an insufficient historical perspective tends to be a characteristic feature of many studies about the contemporary Islamic charitable organizations, it takes a view on some key aspects thathad been linked to the granting of charity throughout the history. In so doing, it reveals not how the charitable institutions were supposed to work in theory, but how they did function in reality and what were the objectives of many of them since the beginnings. Already in the early medieval times, Islamic charitable work shifted its focus from the individual to the welfare of the Muslim community as such and the category of "need" and "poverty" grew to encompass larger segments of society. Second, inmodern times negative aspects have been connected especially to those Islamic charitable organizations whose activities relate to the notions of jihad and da´wa, or the strive to promote Islam.
