Historically the Sino-Vietnamese relationship has been complicated, contradictory and characterized by asymmetry in every aspect (Womack 2006). While the normalization of relations in 1991 between both the states expanded cooperation in many spheres, itis regularly marred by their incapacity to overcome disputes in the South China Sea (SCS) as both sides remain vigilant vis-&#224;-vis their intentions. Given the renewed tensions in Sino-Vietnamese relations, the objective of this paper is threefold. First, it aims to analyze the spheres of cooperation (especially in the economic realm) between both the countries in the 21st century. Secondly, it also considers the limitations of such collaboration with special emphasis on the SCS dispute. Last but notleast, attention is also paid to the Haiyang 981 oil-ring incident and its impact on the Sino-Vietnamese relations.
