From Imagined Communities to Bordered Societies? Bordering Processes in the Americas in the late 20th and early 21st Century
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The article surveys the meaning of borders in the late 20th and early 21st century in the Americas. It is argued that they can be best comprehended as the practices of bordering defined through a process of social construction. They are analysed throughthe prism of simultaneous trends: the one of de-bordering, implying decreased relevance of some of the international borders; and the simultaneous practice of (2) re-bordering implying the demarcation of new borders or their renewed relevance due to theprocess of (3) securitisation of borders in early 21st century. Analysis of the current situation is set against the survey of earlier border scholarship with regards to the Americas. Current trends in the bordering practices are exemplified in the casestudy of the international border between the US and Mexico.
