Monografie se věnuje interakci mezi Evropskou unií a Ruskou federací v sektoru energetiky v letech 2004 – 2014. Zaměření však není na technické a institucionální aspekty vztahu, nýbrž na diskurzivní formace, které určují převládající interpretaci vztahu obou stran. Záměrem monografie je proto snaha překonat tento v převážné míře pouze materiální a institucionální tj. nediskurzivní způsob nahlížení na energetické vztahy mezi Evropskou unií a Ruskem na straně jedné a na straně druhé je cílem práce pomocí teoretického rámce, kombinujícího diskurzivní a mimodiskurzivní přístup a výzkum, interpretovat charakter a vývoj diskurzu EU a Ruska o energetických vztazích v letech 2004 – 2014, které rámují období dvou Evropských komisí José M. Barrosy. Na základě diskurzivní analýzy 1167 textových jednotek produkovaných vedoucími představiteli a institucemi EU a Ruska, monografie objevuje tři nejdůležitější diskurzivní formace, které se zaměřují na tři koncepty, kterými jsou: a) integrace, b) liberalizace a c) diverzifikace. V rámci každého z těchto tří diskurzů EU a Ruska se monografie zaměřuje na analýzu a komparaci jejich obsahu, hlavních témat, vzájemnou percepci Ruska ze strany EU a obráceně, ale i společné a rozdílné znaky a vývoj těchto tří diskurzů. Zároveň se monografie v rámci každého z těchto tří diskurzů věnuje vztahu norem, pravidel a ideových hodnot k pozici a jednání EU resp. Ruska ve vnějších energetických vztazích a tím i jejich vlivu při utváření identity, zájmů a cílů a nástrojů, které k jejich naplnění oba aktéři používají.

The monograph deals with the interaction between the European Union and the Russian Federation in the energy sector between 2004 and 2014. The focus is, however, not on the technical and institutional aspects of the relationship, but rather on the discursive formations that determine the prevailing interpretation of the relationship by both parties. The aim of the monograph is to overcome the largely material- and institutional-only – that is, non-discursive – manner of studying energy relations between the EU and the RF on the one hand, while on the other hand, the work intends to apply a theoretical framework that combines both discursive and extra-discursive approaches with research to interpret the character and evolution of the discourse regarding the EU–RF energy relations in the years 2004–14, as this timeframe is made up of the two periods in which José M. Barroso headed the European Commission. Building on a discourse analysis of 1167 textual units produced by EU and Russian leaders and institutions, the monograph discovers the three most salient discursive formations, which respectively centre around three concepts: a) integration, b) liberalization, and c) diversification. In each of these three EU and Russian discourses, this monograph focuses on the analysis and comparison of their content, the basic themes, the mutual perception of Russia by the EU and the opposite, but also on both the shared and the divergent characteristics and processes of these three discourses. Last but not least, within the framework of these three EU–RF discourses, the treatise will observe the relation of norms and ideological values to the position and behaviour of the EU respectively Russia in external energy relations, and thus also their impact on the formation of the identity, interests, and goals and the instruments, which both actors use to fulfil them.
