The Rise of Nationalism in Asia: the Case of China and Vietnam
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The rise of nationalism and populism has been a trend not only around the rims of the South China Sea but also in other parts of Asia, in Europe and Latin America. In case of Southeast Asia the rise of nationalism has been caused by the end of the Cold War, the wave of liberalization and democratization and last but not least the rise of China and its growing assertiveness in its territorial disputes. China´s reinforcement in the South China Sea serves as a general excuse for military build up and armament races not only in Southeast Asia. However, the approach of Southeast Asian states differs substantially. The international environment and newly emerging patterns of military and political cooperation also must be taken into consideration: abolishing of the TPP, a new trend of the US foreign policy towards Southeast Asia and strengthening of the new Chinese foreign economic policy. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze how populist nationalism has been growing and influencing Sino-Vietnamese rivalry in the South China Sea.
