Explains Carlyle's attempts to assist his friend John Rutter Chorley's election to the Reform Club in February 1849. In a letter to Edward Rigby, Carlyle urges him to vote: "Against Mr. Chorley I should suppose no mortal would think of voting; but it appears unless 20 will take the pains to vote for him, the election may be lost." The article explains: "Chorley was duly elected at the ballot on 28 February . . . and subsequent editions of the Rules and Regulations confirmed the membership of "Chorley, John Rutter Esq."
