Degradation of Inconel 617 and Inconel HX in high-temperature helium environments (900 °C, 101 kPa)

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This study presents a detailed analysis of the oxide layers formed on nickel alloys following exposure to high-temperature helium with impurities (H2, CO, O2, CH4, CO2 and H2O). During exposure, the helium flow rate was around 40 ml/min. The focus is on evaluating the alloys' resistance to corrosion and assessing the extent of surface degradation. Specifically, the investigation centers on alloys 617 and HX. After exposure in a tube furnace, the resulting corrosion layers were examined, with particular attention given to their composition and the structural changes within the material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed for characterization of the oxide layers. The outcomes of these measurements provide a comprehensive assessment of the tested materials' properties and their resistance to corrosion. A key contribution of this work is the generation of additional insights into the behavior of nickel alloys in high-temperature gas environments, which may prove valuable in the future development of advanced nuclear reactors. Furthermore, the findings offer critical data for understanding the long-term performance of materials in extreme conditions, particularly in energy generation applications. Results indicate that the corrosion layer formed on Inconel 617 at 900 °C was more stable and compact than that on Inconel HX, which exhibited a thinner layer and corresponded to a lower weight gain after exposure. Presented at EUROCORR 2025 - – The European Corrosion Congress 8–12 September 2025 | Stavanger, Norway.
