    The objective of this work was to study the behaviour of anion and cation exchange membranes (AEMs, CEMs). The membranes were exposed 24 hours to demineralized water for swelling and then to nine conditioning cycles which were made for AEMs by alternating soaking into 1 mol L-1 NaOH, demineralized water, 1 mol L-1 HCl and demineralized water, for CEMs the order was 1 mol L-1 HCl, demineralized water, 1 mol L-1 NaOH, demineralized water. After each conditioning, the dimensional changes were measured and after the conditioning number 0, 3, 6, and 9 the electrochemical resistance was measured. By the swelling every dimensional parameter increased because the size of ion exchange resins particles inside the IEMs increased. The increase in length and width was much higher for AEMs, by 11-13 % in length and 12-16 % in width than for CEMs which length increased maximally about 3 % in and width maximally about 6 %. This phenomena was caused due to the degradation of the polyester reinforcing textile. During the conditioning, membrane structure is opening and the solution can penetrate further into the membrane microstructure due to the pore and crack propagation. This phenomena caused the decrease of resistance with time, final values of specific resistance were about 60-95 Ω cm for AEMs and 53-90 Ω cm for CEMs, which occurred as the fixed ion concentration decreased and pore volume in the IEMs increased.
