Recent developments in membrane processes based on ionexchange membranes

The objective of the contribution is to summarize the recent developments and achievements in electromembrane processes acomplished by MemBrain company. All innovations are driven by increasing market requirements for more energy efficient separation processes with higher performance and increased selectivity. Of course, it has to be coupled with decreasing specific costs. MemBrain develops systems and products which have to prove the performance at industrial scale. Very significant improvements were made in membrane development. We have developed new composition of the heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes (IM), which allowed us to increase the electrodialysis (ED) temperature up to 70 °C. Another significant achievement was made in the membrane module development for the ED process. We have verified prototypes of modules suitable for thin homogeneous IM. In the field of new applications of electromembrane processes we focused on several objectives, e.g. the application of EDM (electrodialysis-metathesis) for adjustment of mineral profile of dairy intermediates or diffusion dialysis for HCl recovery.
