The paper evaluates soil conditions of black walnut stands in perspective of this tree species and possible wider use in the forest management of floodplain forests. Physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of soil were analysed. Results ofthese analyses were compared with those of stands of natural species composition, mixed stands of black walnut with a soil-improving species and pure oak stands. Results revealed that mixed stands of natural species composition and mixed stands of blackwalnut and linden showed higher leaf fall, more favourable soil chemistry and certain microbial characteristics when compared with pure oak or black walnut stands. Moreover, long-term cultivation of black walnut in comparable sites has not resulted in dramatic deterioration of the respective soil production potentials.
