Die Studie beginnt mit der Überlegung, dass Liebe zwar einerseits als universale Antwort der Menschheit auf die Frage nach dem Sinn eines endlichen Lebens betrachtet werden kann, dass aber andererseits Liebe selbst ein vieldeutiger und dem historischen Wandel unterliegender Begriff ist. Als Ziel der Untersuchung wird bestimmt, die Historizität von Liebe an konkreten Beispielen deutlich zu machen, wobei ein besonderes Augenmerk auf der Sonderform der leidenschaftlichen Liebe liegt. In ihrem Hauptteil beinhaltet die Studie drei Interpretationen: Zunächst wird am Beispiel des Romans Das Fräulein von Sternheim von Sophie von La Roche gezeigt, dass Liebe sich in der Empfindsamkeit auf das Prinzip der Selbstliebe (amour-propre) gründete. Dies heißt aber nicht, dass Liebe mit Eitelkeit oder gar Selbstsucht zu identifizieren sei. This study is based on the consideration that on the one hand love seems to be the universal answer of mankind to death and that on the other hand there are many kinds of love. The goal of the investigation is to exemplify these many historical kinds oflove. In order to reach this aim the author concentrates on the changing culture of emotions and different forms of love presented in German literature at the end of the 18. century. In a more narrow sense the investigation tries to demonstrate that loveas a passion is not so far a natural but more a cultural phenomenon. In it?s main part the article contents three interpretations: At first, by the example of Sophie von La Roche?s Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim, is shown that for the age of sentimentalism love was founded on loving oneself (amour propre), but that loving oneself is not identical with being selfish.
