Ost-West-Untersuchungen wie Saids Orientalismus klammern nicht-imperialistische, östliche Regionen Europas wie den Balkan oftmals aus ihren Untersuchungen aus. Um diese Leerstelle zu füllen, entstand etwa das Konzept des Balkanismus, dessen zentrale Aspekte hier mit Blick auf deutschsprachige Literatur der Gegenwart untersucht werden sollen. Wie wird der Balkan heute dargestellt und wird er weiterhin eher außerhalb Europas verortet? Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Primärtexten zeigt eine gegenteilige Entwicklung, die den Balkan vermehrt ins Zentrum Europas rückt. Dabei werden vor allem Stereotype und Ängste dekonstruiert und gesellschaftliche und politische Aspekte Gesamteuropas verhandelt.

East-West studies such as Said?s Orientalism often exclude non-imperialist eastern regions of Europe, such as the Balkans, from their studies. In order to fill this void, the concept of Balkanism emerged, with its central aspects to be examined here with a view to contemporary German literature. How are the Balkans portrayed today and will they continue to be located almost completely outside of Europe? The examination of the primary texts shows rather the opposite development, which is increasingly moving the Balkans into the centre of Europe. Beyond that, stereotypes and fears are deconstructed and social and political aspects of Europe as a whole are negotiated.
