"Rise and Fall". Ice hockey in Czechoslovakia between 1946-1951

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Czechoslovakian ice hockey was rising after World War II. This was probably due to that the league was still active. However, after the war, there were officially only 1600 players and 70 clubs in the country. Immediatelly after that, numbers started unstopable rising and the enthusiasm climaxed in the World Cup 1947 which were organized in Czechoslovakia. The national hockey team of Czechoslovakia, for the first time, won golden medals and became world champion. Altough hockey was on a rise, politics in the country were different. Everything changed after communist coup in 1948, when democracy were compromised in the country, and Czechoslovakia officially became socialist country. After that, many of great national hockey team players emigrated. Nevertheless, the Czechoslovakian national hockey team still managed to win World Cup in Sweden 1949. Probably it was the too much for communist party that one of the champions, young player Zdeněk Marek stay in Sweden. In the year 1950, instead of traveling to world cup the national hockey team had to stay in Czechoslovakia. Hockey players did not like the situation, but they decided atleast to celebrate new born son of player Ji ří Macelis. Only players from Moravian part of the country did not join them; they traveled home and captain Vladimír Zábrodský was at home with his wife. When they got drunk, they sang and screamed anticommunist slogans. Police catched some of them due to this in that night. In next days, almost all national hockey players were imprinsoned, including Bohumil Modrý, whose was not a part of the team anymore, and due to this he should not have travelled to World Cup in that year anyways. Communist party created trial, and after that, ten active national hockey players were imprissoned and they lost their chance to represent Czechoslovakia again. It took more than twenty years before Czechoslovakia won golden medal in World Cup again.
