At sixteen she was forced to earn a living as a governess, at twenty-five she was a superstar of the German-speaking poetry scene and, after 1848, Austria&apos;s first female journalist. Betty Paoli was involved in turbulent love affairs and surrounded by scandal, and was friends with revolutionary poets, Franz Grillparzer, Adalbert Stifter and Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. She was a guest in aristocratic houses, a translator for the Burgtheater and was feared by some and admired by others in Viennese salons until old age because of her sharp intellect and dry humor.Karin S.
