The measurement of velocity fields by Particle Image Velocimetry is often limited by the scale of the model being measured. This is doubly true for the stereo Particle Image Velocimetry method. Measurement problems at small (but still macroscopic) scales are associated with optical distortions in the optical path of the camera due to the geometry of the model being measured. In addition, there is a calibration problem with stereo Particle Image Velocimetry. With small model sizes or complex model geometries, the implementation of a calibration target is difficult or even impossible. Therefore, this paper is devoted to the description of the Particle Image Velocimetry methodology for measurements at small geometric scales. In this paper, an idealized transparent model of hemodialysis vascular access was used. This model had realistic dimensions of the vascular access (6 mm diameter). A special blood-mimicking working fluid (BMF) with a refractive index corresponding to that of the model was mixed. The refraction and distortion of light passing through the interface between the model and the fluid were so small that it was possible to calibrate the stereo Particle Image Velocimetry outside the measured model. The accuracy of this calibration is discussed and verified by measuring the velocity field on a straight section of the vascular access model for laminar flow.
