Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt surgery and diffusion tensor imaging - statistical results

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Our data of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is presented by two groups. The group A consists of 27 patients (a female 37 %) after implantation (ventriculo-peritoneal shunt surgery) and the group B consists of 24 controls (a female 46 %) recruited as volunteers. The groups were comparable in the mean age (A=72.4, B=69.3). The following variables were observed as fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), both at posterior limb of internal capsule (PLIC), anterior limb of internal capsule (ALIC) and corpus callosum (CC). The variables were measured twice in the group A (before and after the surgery) and once in the group B. The statistical analysis presented here includes paired tests (comparison within the group A) and two-sample tests (comparing the group B with the values for the group A before or after the surgery, respectively) for each variable. In conclusion, the ventriculo-peritoneal shunt surgery did not affect the monitored variables except the significant change (decrease) of fractional anisotropy (FA) at posterior limb of internal capsule (PLIC). This change of FA at PLIC is consistent with results of previously published studies, e.g. Nicot et al. (2014). All the mean values were before the surgery and remained after the surgery significantly higher than in the control group. Ongoing further analysis should confirm the usefulness of the disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space hydrocephalus (DESH) indicator as e.g. in Hashimoto et al. (2010). The study is conducted in the co-operation between Krajská zdravotní, a.s., and J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem with the support of a project grant from the Czech Ministry of Health NT14448-3/2013.
