Red wood ants-oak herbivores: preliminary results of short time observation (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Insecta varia)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Leaf damage by chewing insects and abundance of leaf sap-sucking aphids in oak forest habitat has been studied in 5 localities affected by red wood ants (Formica rufa group) in České středohoří mountains (Litoměřice, North Bohemia). Preliminary results from July 2006 are presented. Ant effect was studied: 1. using comparison of ant effect between one locality with red wood ants (Strážiště hill) and four control localities without or with low red wood ants abundance, 2. using experimental design where half of studied oak trees on each locality was isolated from ants access by petroleum jelly barriers. Aphid densities have been significantly higher (Anova, P<0.05) on the locality affected by ants, contrary to control localities. This result was expectable and is well explainable by mutualistic ants-aphids relationship and there exist documentation of this effect in literature (reviewed e.g. by ADLUNG, 1966). On the other hand for example MAHDI & WHITAKER (1994) showed more complicated si
