    Time-dependent biodiversity development in arable fields created by post-mining reclamation

    Post-mining landscapes provide opportunities to restore ecosystem functions even when supporting productive land uses, such as agriculture. We investigated biodiversity trajectories in 18 arable fields established on reclaimed lignite spoil heaps across a 1?27-year chronosequence in Central Europe. We conducted standardized sampling of vascular plants and arthropods (spiders, bees and wasps, ground beetles, click beetles, woodlice, and myriapods) to assess taxonomic and functional diversity, community turnover, and the occurrence of Red-Listed species in relation to field age and topsoil origin. In total, 110 pitfall traps, operating over 4510 trap-days, were complemented by adjacent vegetation relevés, yielding 106 vascular plant species (Chao-1?= 135, 112?144) and diverse arthropod assemblages. Early-stage fields (1?2 years) supported 28 bee and wasp species and 65 vascular plant species, whereas older fields (9?27 years) hosted 21 bee and wasp species and 43 plant species, indicating transient early-stage peaks in diversity. Several Red-Listed vascular plants and aculeate hymenopterans occurred almost exclusively in these youngest fields, confirming that many threatened taxa depend on the open, sparsely vegetated conditions typical of early reclamation stages. Multivariate analyses (NMDS stress ? 0.033) revealed significant age-related community turnover after accounting for crop identity and vegetation structure, with vegetation height, field age, and topsoil source emerging as the main drivers. Older fields remained dominated by generalist species, and no consistent transition toward specialist-dominated communities was observed. These findings indicate that the conservation value does not necessarily increase linearly with field age. The origin of topsoil influenced, but did not fully determine, early community composition, suggesting that environmental filtering and seed rain can override seed-bank legacies. These findings challenge the assumption of linear increases in conservation value with field age, highlighting the ecological importance of early successional and unmanaged habitats in post-mining agricultural restoration.
