Mining and restoration in the North ? Bohemian region

This report summarizes the history and present mining in the region. This region takes a unique position in the history of mining. Several ore districts are situated here, the welfare of which influenced the development of the Czech state in some periods. Today the North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest brown coal deposit. Whereas ore mining in the region extinguished and the other raw materials mining has relatively small significance, coal mining and the restoration of damages caused by mining activity still have an essential meaning. Opencast mining of brown coal had led to large damages on the landscape. The difficulty in reclamation of the North Bohemian Basin dumps consists in extremely severe properties of rocks in most of the dumps.Sands, kaolinitic clayey sands and kaolinitic and illitic clays are the main materials bulk to the dumps. The admixtures of the bulk rocks consist of organic coal, siderite and pyrite.
