What drives speed on rural roads? Exploratory study using floating car data

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

(Presented at 5th NTSA Annual Scientific Seminar, Norrköping) Speed is a key consideration in the geometric design of roads and is closely linked to safety: on Czech roads speeding has been attributed to almost half of fatal road crashes, making it the most frequent cause of road deaths. It is therefore important to become aware of the environment factors, which contribute to speed choice and can be treated in order to manage speed and safety. These factors do not include only alignment parameters, as is often seen in operating speed studies, but also cross-section, roadside, signing and marking or density of alongside vegetation. The exploratory study was conducted on rural sections of national roads, which present the most critical category in Czech road network. Floating car data from approx. 1000 vehicles were used to estimate speed (and speed consistency between tangents and curves); road environment data on potential speed choice factors were collected from national road database and Google Maps. The data were used to build multivariate speed models, as well as safety models, which attempt to link crash frequency to exposure and speed variables. The current results of an on-going research will be presented. Focus will be given to the methods used in data processing, modelling and interpretation. The ultimate objective of the project is to develop practical guidelines on where and how should low-cost measures be implemented in order to increase speed consistency and improve rural road safety.
