Cycling Helmet Use: an Overview from the Crash Time-Series 1995 - 2015
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A generally low cycling helmet use is observed in the Czech Republic. Originally, it was not ob-ligatory to wear a cycling helmet. The first change of a law, when cyclists under 15 had to wear helmets, was enacted in 2001. Five years later (2006) the threshold of compulsory helmet wearing was moved to 18 years. No complex research of portion of helmeted cyclists has been carried out yet. Only local un-published studies indicate that cyclists use helmets more often during leisure-time activities then when commuting. These two groups of cyclists have only a small intersect. We studied cycling helmet use from crash time-series as we believe that, to a certain degree, crash records data reflects the overall portion of helmet use. The data over period 1995 – 2015 consist of 2036 fatal, 11463 severe and 66881 light injuries. The rest 15865 crashes were without an injury. Results indicate gradually increasing portion of helmeted cyclists, in general, with three distinct transitions to a higher level in 2001, 2006 and 2011, in particular for cyclists under 15. The highest portion of helmeted cyclist was recorded at less than 15 years age group reaching 50 %. We have also studied time-series for cyclists who had always, sometimes and never the obligation to wear a helmet. The lowest helmet use was noticed in the group of the oldest cyclists (above 64).
