If we want to trace the liturgical form of reading Scripture within the context of the Unity of the Brethren’s worship services, we cannot overlook the selection of lessons for the major church holidays that was redacted by Jan Blahoslav and published in 1571. This study examines selected pericopes and their use in the Unity of the Brethren. A comparison of the occurrence of pericopes demonstrates a close connection between the Evanjelia and the printed index from 1558-59 and, at the same time, constitutes a contribution to our efforts to form of a conception of the unpreserved Index of the Titles of all Sermons from 1563. The second topic of the study is to examine the chant melodies. The method used in the Gospels of adapting the recitative melody to the Czech translation of the Bible represents a tradition that was over a hundred years old, but Blahoslav’s unique solution constitutes a considerable share of all of the variant readings. When seeking the rules and meaning behind Blahoslav’s editorial changes, we find that we are encountering here the application of humanist rhetorical principles that Erasmus of Rotterdam summarized in the dialogue De recta latini graecique sermonis pronuntiatione and in the treatise Ecclesiastae.
