The Czech government has approved a new Act on Employment (it will probably become effective as of May 2004), with the objective of creating a suitable framework for labour mobility within the EU and to introduce the European Employment Strategy guidelines. Most of the changes are aimed at activating the unemployed. The act allows unemployed people income from temporary employment of up to half the minimum wage, without them losing their entitlements to unemployment benefits. For unemployed applicants between 50-55 of age the entitlement period is extended for 9 months, with this being 12 months for applicants who are 55 or older. Access to benefits will however become harder and the sanctions will be more severe.
