Coatings, containing drying oils and their fatty acid derivates, as alkyds, drying by oxidative cross-linking, usually contain driers and antioxidants. Cobalt-carboxylates are the most widely used driers for their high efficiency. On the other hand, toxicity of cobalt is known for a very long time. The European Commission reclassified methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO), antioxidant, which is used for over 50 years, as a hazardous carcinogenic substance of the 3rd category. Due to environmental aspects as wellas health concerns it is desirable to avoid using of cobalt driers and MEKO in coatings. The study verified the possibility of using of five manganese-based driers (S1-S5) in catalytic curing reactions and two MEKO-free antioxidants in waterborne alkyd-acrylate (WB1) and waterborne polyurethane alkyd coatings (WB2). The preparation of coatings and their evaluation was carried out according to EN ISO standards.
