The invented method of determining appearance properties of yarn (1) comprising a plurality of yarn sections arranged side-by-side parallel to each other is characterized in that an image of the plurality of yarn (1) coils guided continuously in a layer from a source onto a monitoring drum (6), is sensed by a line sensor (11) wherein the yarn (1) is then drawn off the drum (6). The invention also relates to an apparatus for making the above-indicated method, said apparatus comprising a storage area (63) for monitoring the yarn (1), said storage area (63) being represented by a surface of a revolving monitoring drum (6) wrapped in the form of a spiral by a plurality of yarn coils (1) and coupled with a drive. In the neighborhood of the monitoring drum (6) circumference, there is arranged a light source (10) and an optical line sensor (11) of reflected light. In front of the monitoring drum (6), there are arranged means for feeding yarn (1) and behind the monitoring drum (6), there are arranged means for drawing-off the yarn (1). No licence.
