El trabajo presenta los resultados de un estudio piloto realizado en 15 comunidades shuar durante el a?o 2010. Los temas que forman el eje del presente estudio son la vitalidad de la lengua shuar, la actitud de los hablantes hacia su lengua vernácula, yla posición de la lengua shuar en el sistema educativo. La mayoría de los miembros de esta etnia no son conscientes del peligro que corre la lengua, puesto que no correlacionan el idioma que transmiten a sus hijos con la situación general de la lengua vernácula. El tema subyacente del estudio es la relación entre los conceptos de lengua, cultura e identidad.

The paper exposes the results of a pilot project carried out in 15 Shuar communities in 2010. The main topics of the study are the vitality of Shuar, attitude of the speakers to their vernacular language and position of the language in the education system. Most of the tribe members do not realize the endangerment of their language and for that reason they do not see the importance of transmitting the language to the next generation. The second plan topic of the study is the relation of language, culture and identity.
