The article challenges the black and white perspective about the East-West relationships developed by Said in his famous essay on Orientalism. The cultures from Central and Eastern Europe tried to include their own agenda in the big picture the West projected upon the East.Opposition was nuanced and mitigated. The Romanian scholar Dimitrie Cantemir is an excellent example in this respect.
